How to Restore Leather Shoes and Jackets: A Care Guide with a Natural Leather Balm
Be honest. We all have that one favourite pair in the wardrobe. Leather shoes you’ve worn for years, that have travelled half the world with you, but now look… well, let’s be honest, tired. They’re stiff, maybe a little cracked, and they stopped keeping water out long ago.
Leather is a durable material, but without proper nourishment and waterproofing it dries out and cracks over time. The good news is that you don’t have to throw most leather items away – they just need the right regeneration.
In this article we look at how a natural leather balm works, why jojoba oil is a miracle for cracked surfaces, and why you can leave your gloves in the drawer when you use it.

Why does leather crack and how can you prevent it?
Leather is a natural material that behaves much like our own skin. When it loses its natural oils, the fibres contract, stiffen and start to break. Caring for leather shoes or bags is therefore not just about looks, but about making them last longer.
Leather’s most common enemies are:
- Water and moisture: leather stays stiff once it dries.
- Sun and heat: they cause oxidation and brittleness.
- Lack of nourishment: missing fats lead to a loss of suppleness.
The solution is regular leather waterproofing and deep nourishment that restores the fibres’ elasticity.
That’s why we developed a balm that works on the same principle as our other household products. It’s really the “little brother” of our popular Beeswax Wood Balsam, with a recipe adapted specially for the needs of delicate leather. While wood needs protection from drying out, leather also needs to regain its natural softness.
The secret is in the ratio: beeswax and jojoba oil 🌿
There are plenty of chemical products on the market, but the best results often come from pure nature. Our Leather Balm is built on a minimalist yet highly effective recipe with no synthetic fillers.
1. Jojoba oil for leather (deep nourishment)
Jojoba oil isn’t an ordinary oil – chemically, it’s a liquid wax. Its structure is very similar to the natural oils of skin. That’s why it:
- Absorbs quickly and leaves no greasy film.
- Penetrates deep into the material and softens stiff leather.
- Doesn’t spoil or turn yellow.
2. Beeswax (a protective shield)
While the oil nourishes from within, beeswax works on the surface. It creates a strong wax barrier that:
- Acts as natural waterproofing against rain and damp.
- Protects the surface from scratches.
- Gives items a soft, satin sheen.

Bonus: so pure it’s good for your hands too
With ordinary waterproofing sprays and creams, you’re advised to ventilate the room and wear gloves to avoid the chemicals. With ours, it’s exactly the opposite.
Our balm is 100% natural. When you apply it with a cloth or your fingers, some of it ends up on your skin – and that’s a good thing! Jojoba oil and beeswax are premium cosmetic ingredients.
- Hands dry from work? Simply massage the leftover balm into your hands after treating your shoes.
- Rough elbows and cracked heels? The balm works like an intensive treatment that softens even the toughest skin on your body. So no washing it off with soap – let nature do its work.
How to treat leather items properly
- Clean: remove dust and dirt from the leather.
- Apply: put a small amount of balm on a sponge or straight onto your hand.
- Rub in: massage it in with circular movements. The warmth of your hands helps the balm absorb better.
- Let it soak in: leave it for 10–15 minutes.
- Buff: polish with a dry cloth until it shines.

One tin for the whole family (four-legged members included 🐶)
This wax balm isn’t just for shoes. Use it to revive an old leather handbag, a belt, or a leather sofa that the kids and the dog have already “marked”.
💡 Tip for dog owners: collars, leads… and what about paws? 🐾
Do you have a good leather collar or lead? Mud and water ruin them. Treating them regularly with our balm extends their life and prevents rotting.
And here’s our secret tip. Because the ingredients are safe and non-toxic, the balm makes great first aid for dog paws.
- Before a winter walk, the wax forms a protective layer on the paws against harsh road salt and snow.
- After a long hike over rocks, the jojoba oil soothes and nourishes dry, cracked paw pads. It’s one product that protects both the gear and the dog.
