How to Restore Leather Shoes and Jackets: A Care Guide with Natural Leather Balm

Be honest. We all have that one "favourite" in the wardrobe. The leather shoes you've worn for years, that have travelled half the world with you, but now look… well, let's be honest, tired. They're stiff, maybe a little cracked, and they stopped keeping water out a long time ago.

Leather is a durable material, but without the right nourishment and waterproofing it dries out and cracks over time. The good news is that you don't have to throw most leather goods away – they just need proper restoration.

In this article we'll look at how a natural leather balm works, why jojoba oil is a miracle for cracked surfaces and why you can happily leave your gloves in the drawer while using it.

Caring for leather shoes with natural balm

Why does leather crack and how can you prevent it?

Leather is a natural material that behaves much like our own skin. When it loses its natural oils, the fibres contract, harden and start to break. Caring for leather shoes or handbags isn't just about looks – it's about making them last longer.

Leather's biggest enemies are:

  • Water and moisture: once it dries, leather stays stiff.

  • Sun and heat: they cause oxidation and brittleness.

  • Lack of nourishment: missing fats make it lose its flexibility.

The solution is regular waterproofing and deep nourishment that gives the fibres back their elasticity.

That's why we developed a balm that works on the same principle as our other household products. It's actually the "little brother" of our popular Beeswax Wood Balsam, just with a recipe adapted specifically for delicate leather. While wood needs protecting from drying out, leather also needs to regain its natural softness.

The secret is in the ratio: beeswax and jojoba oil 🌿

There are plenty of chemical products on the market, but pure nature often gives the best results. Our Leather Balm is built on a minimalist yet remarkably effective recipe with no synthetic fillers.

1. Jojoba oil for leather (deep nourishment)

Jojoba oil isn't an ordinary oil – chemically, it's a liquid wax. Its structure is very similar to the natural oils in skin. That means it:

  • Absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy film.

  • Gets deep into the structure of the material and softens stiff leather.

  • Doesn't go off or turn yellow.

2. Beeswax (a protective shield)

While the oil nourishes from within, the beeswax works on the surface. It creates a strong wax barrier that:

  • Acts as natural waterproofing against rain and moisture.

  • Protects the surface from scratches.

  • Gives your things a soft, satin sheen.

Bonus: so pure it's good for your hands too

With ordinary waterproofing sprays and creams, you're advised to ventilate the room and wear gloves to avoid the chemicals. With ours, it's the exact opposite.

Our balm is 100% natural. When you apply it with a cloth or your fingers, some of it ends up on your skin – and that's a good thing! Jojoba oil and beeswax are premium ingredients in cosmetics.

  • Dry hands from work? Simply massage the leftover balm into your hands after treating your shoes.

  • Rough elbows and cracked heels? The balm works like an intensive treatment that softens even the toughest skin on your body. So no washing it off with soap – let nature do its work.

How to treat leather goods properly

  1. Clean: remove dust and dirt from the leather.

  2. Apply: put a small amount of balm on a sponge or straight onto your hand.

  3. Rub in: massage it in with circular movements. The warmth of your hands helps the balm absorb better.

  4. Let it absorb: leave it for 10–15 minutes.

  5. Buff: polish with a dry cloth until it shines.

Restored leather shoes

One tin for the whole family (four-legged members included 🐶)

This wax balm isn't just for shoes. Use it to revive an old leather handbag, a belt or a leather sofa that the kids and the dog have already "left their mark" on.

💡 Tip for dog owners: collars, leads… and what about paws? 🐾

Do you have a good-quality leather collar or lead? Mud and water ruin them. Treating them regularly with our balm makes them last longer and stops them from rotting.

And here's our secret tip: because the ingredients are safe and non-toxic, the balm makes great first aid for dog paws.

  • Before a winter walk, the wax forms a protective layer on the paws against harsh road salt and snow.

  • After a long hike over rocks, the jojoba oil soothes and nourishes dry, cracked paw pads. One product that protects both your gear and your dog.
