An Eco-Friendly Christmas: Gift Ideas and Zero-Waste Tips
Christmas is “the most wonderful time of the year”, as Andy Williams sang. We couldn’t agree more — but we’d also like to point out that the festive season is when we produce twice as much waste as usual.
An eco-friendly Christmas is easier than you might think, and just as much fun. It can even save you money! There are plenty of ways to make a positive difference to the planet while still enjoying Christmas to the full. That’s why we’ve put together 5 tips for small changes with a big impact.
🌲 The Christmas tree and sustainable decorations
Can any of us imagine Christmas without a tree? It’s one of the strongest symbols of the season. Many of you have probably wondered which kind of tree is best.

If you prefer a real tree, why not try one in a pot this year? After the holidays you can plant it in the garden or use it again next year. Just make sure it has its full root ball — many trees have their roots cut back too far, which is why most of them don’t survive replanting.
If you go for a cut tree, remember to take it to a local collection point after Christmas so it can be recycled. And if you choose an artificial one, pick a tree you won’t tire of even after many years.
⭐ Decorations that fill your home with scent
Shops full of Christmas decorations tempt us to buy new ones every year. How about making your own at home this time? Simply slice an orange or an apple into rounds and hang them on the tree together with cinnamon sticks. Decorations like these will fill the whole room with a lovely scent.
You’ll find lots of ideas for natural decorations online, and making them is great fun. Christmas isn’t about having a different tree every year, so if you already have older decorations at home, keep using them — or swap them with friends.
And of course, candles are an essential part of the festive atmosphere. You’ll find beautiful, fragrant ones in our shop, sold individually or as a set for your Advent wreath.

💡 Our tip: If you don’t have time to make decorations yourself, try our Beeswax Christmas Ornaments — hand-cut Christmas decorations made from pure honeycomb. Their unique texture and golden colour add real magic to your Christmas tree.
🍽️ Storing food without unnecessary plastic
Did you know that more than 7 million tonnes of food are thrown away in the UK every year after Christmas?
Christmas is without doubt a time of abundance and generosity. Tables, fridges and pantries are full of food that people don’t manage to eat, so a lot of it ends up being wasted.

How can you prevent that?
A shopping list and zero-waste wraps
Before you go shopping, write a shopping list and buy only what’s on it. Choose meat-free dishes more often and shop seasonally and locally.
If you still can’t finish everything you’ve prepared, storing it properly is key. That’s why we recommend beeswax wraps and beeswax bags.
- Christmas baking and bread stay fresh much longer in Waxosacks than in plastic.
- For cut vegetables (pumpkin, broccoli, cucumber) and for covering salad bowls, larger eco wraps such as Waxopack L (35 × 37 cm) are ideal. For an even bigger tray bake, try a custom-size wrap.
- Because our beeswax wraps let food breathe, bread doesn’t “sweat” in them and mould has less of a chance.
♻️ Eco-friendly gift wrapping
More than half of people buy new wrapping paper every year. But a lot of it contains foil, glitter or plastic, which means it can’t be recycled.
- Many products already come in their own packaging, so all you need is a piece of jute twine or a ribbon.
- You can also use our lovely Waxopack gift boxes. They’re made from sturdy recycled cardboard and will be useful long after Christmas for storing small things (such as crayons or beads).

🎁 Original and practical Christmas gift ideas for the whole family
Gifts are an essential part of Christmas. Why not make them eco-friendly this year and choose quality over quantity? The fact is that many presents go unused after the holidays. You could also swap a physical gift for an experience.
If you do choose physical gifts, go for things the recipient will really use, made from certified materials and produced locally. Eco gifts ♻️ are not only thoughtful but also practical and long-lasting. Instead of yet another unnecessary piece of plastic, give something that genuinely makes life easier and helps on the way to a zero-waste home.
